2022-07-28 Butterflies

On June 25th, we went into the Castro to see a screening of The Unabridged Mrs.Vera's Daybook. We'd known that our friend Ruby was part of and documenting a... it's not exactly drag, but it's definitely drag-adjacent... community, but we didn't really know about The Verasphere, and we came away from the film inspired.

Charlene said "we need more color", and suggested butterflies across the garage. I had some marine plywood scraps for the wings and thicker redwood material for the body, so I cut out shapes on the bandsaw and scroll saw, and clamped an angle grinder to the bench and filled the workshop with sawdust, and after a coat or three of some scrap paint we had lying around, ended up with...

   

After some playing around with colors, we ended up with a bunch of samples, cut apart a trellis for some roughly 1/4" steel rod, bent those to be mounting brackets, and....

       

And in the process, discovered that an aluminum ladder that I'd picked up somewhere along the way was not a good idea...
