The first swallowtail
chrysalisThe second
swallowtail chrysalis had us concerned, because it's a dull brown,
until we read that it adapts to the color of the branch on which it
forms its chrysalisreleased
into the gardens at the school Charlene planted a butterfly garden
at the back of the house, well away from most of the rest of the
garden because we knew we were going to encourage caterpillars and
things that munched the foliage. We had a whole bunch of caterpillars
on the fennel/anise plants, then we had a big storm and many of them
disappeared, but we saw at least two surviving, so Charlene took them
into school so the kids could watch them.
After a few days they got fat, then slow, then formed their chrysalis
(dropping their outer skins on the way). Today the first of them hatched.
And we've found some more caterpillars on the plants. Woohoo!
